Infirmary Things You Want to Know!

This includes Yachad and Life @ Lavi, but NOT STAFF

On behalf of the Lavi infirmary, we are so excited to welcome your children to camp this summer! Our goal is to make sure everyone has a healthy and safe summer. Attached you will find the guidelines for sending medications to camp. Please be sure to read all instructions fully, for any questions reach out to us at infirmary@camplavi.com.

MEDICATIONS

In our ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of campers who will be taking medications, vitamins or supplements on a daily basis while at camp, we are continuing to partner with J Drugs to supply pre-packaged medications to our campers for the upcoming summer. Please see instruction for ordering medications through Jdrugs: https://form.jotform.com/jdrugs/camp-lavi-medication

Pre-packaged medications provide for a safe, sterile and potentially error free way to dispense medications. This distribution method is endorsed by the American Camp Association and is used by hospitals, nursing homes, schools and camps throughout the United States.

Our policy for dispensing medicine requires ALL campers to use J Drugs to package their prescription medications, over the counter medications, vitamins, and supplements. Campers will not be allowed to keep vitamins or supplements with them in the bunks.

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO CONTACT YOUR CHILD’S PRESCRIBING DOCTOR TO SEND JDRUGS ALL PRESCRIPTIONS VIA E-SCRIBE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. For any questions regarding sending prescriptions to JDrugs please contact them directly. TEL:718-258-6686 EMAIL: JDRUGSCAMPS@JDRUGSRX.COM

It is very important to ensure that all medications are entered into J-Drugs AND CampMinder separately. This will ensure that we can properly verify everything once it arrives to camp and ensure nothing is missing. All medications entered into CampMinder will be reviewed by the infirmary staff. A nurse will call you prior to the start of the summer to verify these medications and answer any questions.

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION

Standard Administration Times:

Our scheduled medication administration times in camp are after breakfast (approximately 9:15 – 10:30 am) and after dinner (approximately 7:15 – 8:00 pm). Campers come to the infirmary during these times to take any morning or evening medications. When entering these medications into JDrugs/CampMinder please mark them as “Breakfast” and/or “Dinner” medications.

Growth hormones are typically administered after dinner as well during this 7:15 – 8:00 pm time slot. We often give campers until 9:30 to come in for growth hormone. Unless the growth hormone needs to be taken in the morning, please mark these as “Dinner” medications as well.

Wakeup/Bedtime Medications:

Some campers require medications that must be administered immediately upon awakening or immediately before bed. These are typically administered outside of the infirmary, on boys and girls campuses. Ex: Melatonin or Desmopressin. If a medication MUST be administered first thing in the morning or immediately before bed, please be sure to mark these as “wake up” or “bedtime” medications.

Midday Meds/Specialized Times:

We are happy to work with anyone who requires specialized medication times outside of our typical breakfast and dinner hours. Ex: lunch or afternoon meds. These are still given in the infirmary. It is important to note that children are often in activities during these hours. To avoid disrupting their day, medications should only be given during these times if absolutely necessary. When entering these medications into JDrugs/CampMinder please mark them as “Lunch” or “Other.”

SPECIALTY MEDICATIONS

Certain medications are not available through JDrugs. These include: growth hormone, insulin, inhalers, seizure rescue medications and certain vitamins or supplements. Please do NOT send any medications from home unless they are not available through JDrugs. To ensure these medications are received and administered appropriately, please fill out the “Specialty Medication Form” found under Forms and Documents on CampInTouch. These medications must be sent to camp directly. We ask that all medications that will be traveling with the campers be checked in with their respective chaperones. These medications will be collected by the infirmary staff upon arrival.

Labeling Medication:

Any specialty medication in pill form that must be administered daily should be individually packaged (each individual pill in its own pill bag). These packages MUST have the camper’s name, division, name of the medication and time it should be administered. We recommend these bags available on Amazon for easy use: EZ Individual Pill Bags. If your child requires medication that you will be sending from home, it is imperative that these instructions are followed. This does NOT include liquid medications or medications that are only given on an as needed basis.

MISSED MEDICATIONS

We understand how important your child’s health and medications are. We ask that you partner with us to ensure your children have the healthiest and safest summer possible. Division heads and infirmary staff will remind campers to come to the infirmary for their medications. Campers who do not come to the infirmary will have their medications brought directly to them. However, if a camper fails to show for 3 consecutive days, despite our reminders, we will have to call home and bring this to the camp director’s attention. Depending on the medication’s importance and safety implications, the plan may include additional supervision, emotional support, or a review of whether camp remains an appropriate and safe setting for the camper.

MEDICATION STORAGE

At Camp Lavi, in accordance with Pennsylvania state regulations and the American Camp Association (ACA) guidelines, no medications, including prescription, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, vitamins, or supplements, may be kept in campers’ bunks. All medications must be stored securely in the camp’s infirmary or another designated locked area, except for specific emergency medications that are approved for self-carry.

EMERGENCY MEDICATIONS THAT MAY BE SELF-CARRIED

Certain life-saving medications may be carried by campers with prior approval:

  • Epinephrine auto-injectors (e.g., EpiPen)
  • Inhalers for asthma
  • Glucagon for diabetes management

These medications must be in their original, properly labeled containers and accompanied by a Medication Administration Record (MAR) signed by both the prescribing healthcare provider and the camper’s parent or guardian. The camper must be trained and demonstrate the ability to self-administer the medication appropriately.

Please note: If you choose to allow your child to carry emergency medications (such as EpiPens or inhalers), we recommend sending an additional supply to be kept securely in the infirmary. Camp Lavi cannot be responsible for medications that are lost or misplaced while in the camper’s possession.

MEDICAL CARE AND INJURIES

Should your child require antibiotics or supportive devices such as wraps, splints, braces, or crutches, these will be provided and billed to your account. If X-ray imaging is needed, a mobile imaging service is available and will be billed as well. You will be notified should any of these services be necessary.
